Dhanteras Gold Buying Guide for Delhi

Gold and silver coins with a small brass diya and marigold petals on ivory cloth

Dhanteras, the first day of the Diwali festival period, is when many families in Delhi buy something in gold or silver. It is traditionally seen as an auspicious day for a new purchase, and for many households it is a ritual they look forward to all year. It is also one of the busiest days in any jewellery market. We are writing this on 21 October 2026, with Dhanteras falling in early November, so there is time to plan properly. This is how we, the Sun Sea team in Karol Bagh, suggest approaching it.

What people traditionally buy

Tradition varies from family to family and region to region, and there is no single correct answer. Many people buy gold or silver coins, some buy a small piece of jewellery, and some buy new utensils, often of brass, copper or silver. Others buy a modest item and treat the gesture as the point. Choose what fits your family's custom and your budget; the purchase does not have to be large to be meaningful.

For the exact muhurat, please check the festival calendar. Timings differ by panchang and by city, and we do not want you to rely on a date or time in a blog post.

Plan ahead and avoid the festival-day queue

The single most useful thing you can do is decide before the day. On Dhanteras itself, shops are full, staff are stretched, and it is hard to compare options or ask questions properly. Buying a few days earlier, or at the start of the festival week, is calmer and gives you the same pleasure of the purchase.

  • Decide what you want: coin, jewellery, silver item or a mix.
  • Set a budget in advance and stick to it.
  • Visit a week or so before if you can, choose the item, and ask about collecting it closer to the day.
  • If you want a specific design or a customised piece, start early. Anything made to order takes time.
  • Keep your ID and payment method ready so billing is quick.

Check the day's rate first

Gold and silver rates move daily, and festival demand can make people feel rushed. Before you go to any shop, look at the current figures on our rates page. Knowing the rate lets you sense-check what you are quoted and keeps you from deciding in a hurry. Rates change through the day and from one day to the next, so treat any figure as a reference rather than a promise.

Coins or jewellery?

Both are popular, and the right choice depends on what you want from the purchase.

  • Coins are simple. You pay for weight and purity, with little or no design cost, and they are easy to store and gift. Our article on why MMTC-PAMP gold coins are worth considering explains what to look for in a sealed coin.
  • Jewellery can be worn and enjoyed, and the price includes making charges for the craftsmanship, so you are paying for design as well as metal.
  • Silver is a lighter-budget option and is often chosen for small gifts and for traditional items.

If you are not sure how gold and silver coins compare, read our guide on gold versus silver coins for gifting. If you are buying many at once for a team or clients, the corporate gifting page covers bulk orders, and our corporate Diwali coin gifting guide walks through the planning.

Hallmark and invoice checks

Festival crowds are the worst time to skip basic checks, so do them calmly.

  • Gold jewellery should carry a BIS hallmark, which includes the BIS mark, the purity in carat or fineness, and a 6-character alphanumeric HUID. You can verify the HUID on the BIS Care app. Our guide to checking BIS hallmark and HUID shows the steps.
  • For coins, check that the coin is sealed in its original packaging and that the weight and purity are clearly stated.
  • Ask for an itemised invoice. It should show the weight, purity, the value of the metal, any making charges and GST, and the total.
  • Check that what is written on the invoice matches what you are holding, before you leave the shop.
  • Keep the invoice and packaging safe. You will need them if you ever sell, exchange or insure the item.

At Sun Sea, every price is broken down in this way: gold weight and purity, gold value, diamond value (carat and shape) where relevant, side diamonds if any, making charges, and a flat 3% GST on the whole total.

Set a budget that you will not regret

Festival purchases are easy to over-extend. A useful approach is to decide the total first, then work backwards: a coin of a smaller weight, a lighter piece of jewellery, or a silver item may leave you happier than stretching for a larger one. It is also fine to buy small each year. Many families build up a collection over time instead of trying to buy a lot in one season.

Quick FAQ

When is Dhanteras 2026 and what is the muhurat?

Dhanteras falls in early November 2026. Please check the exact date and muhurat on a reliable festival calendar, as timings can vary by panchang and city. We recommend not leaving the purchase to the last hour.

Is it better to buy gold coins or jewellery on Dhanteras?

It depends on your goal. Coins are simple to price and store, with little or no design cost. Jewellery can be worn and enjoyed, but includes making charges. Many families buy a small coin for the ritual and save larger jewellery purchases for another time.

How do I avoid the Dhanteras rush in Karol Bagh?

Buy a few days early, visit on a weekday, decide your budget and item in advance, and call the shop beforehand. The festival day itself is the busiest, so it is the hardest time to compare options or ask questions.

What should I check on the bill when buying festival gold?

Check that the invoice lists weight, purity, metal value, making charges, GST and the total, and that it matches the item. For jewellery, confirm the BIS hallmark and HUID. For coins, confirm the packaging is sealed and the purity and weight are stated.
