How to Choose a Diamond Jeweller in Karol Bagh
Sun Sea Jewellers, Karol Bagh, New Delhi · 20 October 2026

Karol Bagh has been a jewellery destination for generations, and that is both its strength and its challenge. There are many shops, many claims, and a first-time diamond buyer can leave a day of browsing with more confusion than clarity. We have been serving families here since 1984, and this is the checklist we would give a friend who asked how to pick among diamond jewellers in Karol Bagh.
None of this is specific to us. Use it on every shop you visit, including ours. A jeweller who is comfortable with these questions is usually one worth dealing with.
Start with what you are actually buying
A diamond purchase is rarely just a stone. Most people buy a ring, pendant, earrings or a bridal set, which means you are paying for diamond, gold, labour and tax together. Before comparing shops, decide roughly what piece you want, whether you prefer natural or lab-grown stones, and the gold purity you want. If you are still deciding on natural versus lab-grown, our lab-grown diamond jewellery guide explains the difference in plain terms.
The checklist for a first-time buyer
- Certification: for any centre stone of meaningful size, ask for the grading report from a recognised gemmological laboratory. The report number should match the stone, and many labs let you verify it online. Our guide to GIA, IGI and HRD reports explains what each report tells you.
- A full price breakup: you should see gold weight and purity, gold value, diamond value with carat and shape, any side diamonds, making charges and GST as separate lines. A single lump-sum figure makes comparison impossible.
- Finished-jewellery pricing: ask whether the quote is for the complete piece or for the stone alone. A loose-stone price plus a separate setting charge is a different calculation from a finished-piece price, and the tax treatment can differ.
- A written invoice: the bill should describe the item, weights, purity, stone details and GST. Keep it, along with any grading report, in one folder.
- Hallmarking: gold jewellery should carry the BIS hallmark, which includes the BIS mark, the purity in carat or fineness, and a 6-character alphanumeric HUID. You can check the HUID in the BIS Care app. We cover this in our BIS hallmark and HUID guide.
- Seeing the stone in person: photos and videos help, but a diamond has to be seen under normal light, tilted, and held next to alternatives.
- Aftercare questions: ask about ring resizing, polishing, prong checks and what happens if a stone loosens. Get the answers in writing before you pay, because policies differ from shop to shop.
How to compare quotes fairly
Two quotes for a diamond ring can look very different and still describe different things. Line them up properly before you decide which is cheaper.
- Compare like with like: the same carat weight, shape, colour grade, clarity grade and cut quality, ideally from the same type of report.
- Compare gold the same way: weight in grams and purity, such as 18 karat against 14 karat, since both change the price.
- Compare making charges as a separate line, not buried in a per-gram rate you cannot check.
- Check whether GST is included or added on top, and on what base it is calculated.
- Check the day: gold rates move daily, so quotes taken on different days are not directly comparable. You can see today's reference on our live rates page.
If a shop will not break a quote down, that is information too. A clear breakup is not a favour, it is the minimum you should expect.
Red flags worth walking away from
- Pressure to buy today because a rate or offer is about to end.
- A stone described with vague words such as "eye-clean" or "very good quality" but no grading details to back it.
- Refusal to give a written, itemised invoice, or a request to pay without one.
- A report that cannot be verified, or a report number that does not match the stone.
- Gold jewellery with no hallmark, or a hallmark the seller cannot explain.
- Prices that are far below everyone else's without a clear reason such as a lower purity, a smaller stone or a lower grade.
- Unwillingness to let you compare, take photos for family, or come back another day.
A word on the Karol Bagh market itself
Because so many jewellers sit close together here, it is perfectly normal to visit three or four before deciding. Do it. Carry the same notes to each shop, ask the same questions, and write down the answers. For a wider orientation to the area, see our Karol Bagh jewellery market guide.
How we do it at Sun Sea
We sell complete finished jewellery, not a loose diamond billed separately from a gold setting. Every price we give breaks down into gold weight and purity, gold value, diamond value with carat and shape, side diamonds if there are any, making charges, and a flat 3% GST on the whole total. You can see exactly how this looks on our solitaire jewellery page, where you can configure a ring, pendant or earrings, in natural or lab-grown stones, and see the breakup before you visit.
If you want something designed around you, such as a wedding set, we offer a bespoke design consultation through our bridal jewellery service. We would rather you ask every question now than have doubts later.

Quick FAQ
Do I need a certificate for every diamond?
For a significant centre stone, a grading report from a recognised laboratory is strongly advisable, because it records the carat, colour, clarity and cut that you are paying for. For very small accent diamonds in a piece, individual reports are not usually issued, so the jeweller's written description in the invoice matters more.
Is the price of a diamond ring the same as the price of the diamond?
No. A finished ring also includes the gold, the making charges and GST. That is why a proper breakup, with each of those listed separately, is the only reliable way to compare two shops.
How can I check the hallmark on gold diamond jewellery?
Look for the BIS mark, the purity marking and the 6-character HUID on the gold part of the piece, and check the HUID in the BIS Care app. Rules on hallmarking can be updated, so check the current requirements if you are unsure.
Should I buy on my first visit to a shop?
There is no need to. Collect itemised quotes, look at the stone in person, and take a day to compare. A good jeweller will not mind you coming back.
