Gold Jewellery Shop in Karol Bagh: What to Check
Sun Sea Jewellers, Karol Bagh, New Delhi · 20 October 2026

Karol Bagh has been one of Delhi's best-known places to buy gold for generations, and that is both a blessing and a challenge. There are many shops, many quotes, and many ways of presenting the same piece. If you are looking for a gold jewellery shop in Karol Bagh, the shop matters less than whether you know how to read what you are being shown. This guide is what we at Sun Sea Jewellers would tell a family member who is about to buy gold for the first time.
We have been in Karol Bagh since 1984. The questions are always the same: how is this price made up, is it hallmarked, and why is one quote lower than another?
How a gold jewellery bill is built
Every honest gold bill is made of the same few parts. If a quote does not show them separately, ask for them. A complete breakup has:
- Gold weight and purity: how many grams, and whether it is 22K, 18K or another purity.
- Gold value: the weight multiplied by the day's rate for that purity.
- Stone value: if the piece has diamonds or other stones, their carat weight and shape, priced separately.
- Side diamonds, if any, shown as their own line.
- Making charges: the cost of crafting the piece, shown as a separate figure and not folded into the rate.
- GST: charged on the whole total.
At Sun Sea, every price is shown as this full breakup, and GST is a flat 3% on the whole computed total, covering gold, diamonds and making charges together. We sell complete finished jewellery, so there is no situation where a stone is billed in one place and the gold setting in another. You see one piece and one clear total, with every line visible.
22K, 18K and 24K in plain terms
The K stands for karat, a measure of how much of the metal is pure gold out of 24 parts.
- 24K is the purest form of gold. It is soft, which is why it is mostly used for coins and bars rather than everyday jewellery.
- 22K has a higher gold content and is the traditional choice for Indian jewellery such as bangles, chains and bridal sets. It is hard enough to be shaped into jewellery but still rich in colour.
- 18K has less pure gold and more alloy metal. It is harder, holds stones more securely and is often used for diamond jewellery and lighter, modern designs.
Neither is better in every case. 22K suits traditional pieces, while 18K often suits settings with diamonds. What matters is that the purity on the bill matches the purity stamped on the piece, and that you compare like with like. If you are unsure which to pick, ask us to show the same design in both and explain the difference in weight and price.
Check the hallmark before you pay
A BIS hallmark on gold jewellery includes the BIS mark, the purity in carat or fineness, and a 6-character alphanumeric code called the HUID. The HUID is unique to each piece, and it can be checked using the BIS Care app. We have written a separate walkthrough in our guide to checking BIS hallmark and HUID in Delhi.
Our advice is simple. Look at the mark on the piece itself, read the purity, note the HUID, and make sure the invoice describes the same purity. If something does not match, ask before you pay, not after.
How to compare two quotes fairly
This is where most confusion happens. Two shops can quote very different totals for what looks like the same necklace, and the difference is usually not about honesty. It is about what is and is not included. Before comparing, make sure the following are identical:
- The same purity, for example both 22K, not one 22K and one 18K.
- The same weight, since a heavier piece of the same design simply contains more gold.
- The same gold rate, taken on the same day.
- Making charges stated as a separate figure in both quotes.
- GST included in both totals, or excluded in both.
If one quote gives a single 'all-in' number and another gives a breakup, ask the first shop to break it down. A price that cannot be explained line by line is hard to compare, and that alone is worth noting.
Check the day's rate before you walk in
Gold rates move, and the rate on the day you buy sets the gold value on your bill. You can look at the current figures on our rates page before you leave home, so you know roughly what the gold component should be for a given weight and purity.
Questions to ask about stones and wastage
Gold jewellery that carries stones or intricate work raises a few extra questions. These are worth asking at any shop, ours included.
- Are the stones natural or lab-grown, and are they billed separately from the gold?
- What is the weight of the gold alone, excluding the stones? Gold weight and total piece weight are not the same thing.
- Is there any wastage or deduction built into the making charge, and if so how is it shown?
- For diamonds, what are the carat weight and shape, and are there side diamonds?
- What does the invoice say about the purity and the HUID?
For diamond pieces, we have a longer guide on how to choose a diamond jeweller in Karol Bagh, which covers the stone side in more detail.
What to carry when you come to buy
You do not need much, but a few things make the visit smoother.
- A photo or sketch of the design you have in mind, if you have one.
- Your rough budget, so we can show you pieces in the right weight range.
- Family members who will wear or approve the piece. Gold buying is rarely a solo decision.
If you are buying for a wedding, it helps to read our notes on bridal jewellery in Delhi first, and to bring the outfit colours if you can.

Quick FAQ
How do I find a trustworthy gold jewellery shop in Karol Bagh?
Look at what a shop shows you rather than what it says about itself. A trustworthy shop gives a full breakup of gold weight, purity, gold value, making charges and GST, shows the BIS hallmark and HUID on the piece, and is comfortable with you comparing quotes elsewhere. Visit more than one, ask the same questions at each, and note which answers are clear.
Are making charges negotiable or fixed?
That depends on the shop and the piece, and we do not want to promise anything general here. What we can say is that making charges should always be shown as their own line, so you can see exactly what you are paying for the craftsmanship separate from the gold itself.
Is 22K or 18K better for everyday wear?
18K is harder because it contains more alloy, so it tends to resist daily wear better and holds diamonds securely. 22K is richer in colour and is the traditional choice for bangles, chains and bridal sets. Many people choose 22K for traditional pieces and 18K for diamond jewellery.
How much GST is charged on gold jewellery at Sun Sea?
We charge a flat 3% GST on the whole computed total, which includes gold, diamonds and making charges. Since we sell complete finished jewellery, this is shown as one clear line on the bill. As tax rules can change, it is always sensible to check the current rate.
